These terms apply to your use of SoundPainter.io, including the website, the application, any sounds played through it, and any content you create or share while using it. By creating an account, you agree to these terms.
You need an account to use SoundPainter. You provide an email address and a password when you sign up. You're responsible for keeping your login credentials secure. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately.
You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. If we learn that a user is under 13, we will delete the account and associated data.
We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these terms. You may delete your own account at any time from the Account Management section of the app. When you delete your account, your data is removed from the active database.
SoundPainter provides access to a library of approximately 600,000 sounds. We filter this library to include only sounds that are marked as CC0 (public domain) by their uploaders. This is a legitimate and honest claim, and it means you can use these sounds freely: in your sessions, in your podcasts, in your streams, in your YouTube videos, without attribution, for commercial or personal use.
We expect that normal use of SoundPainter will reliably produce CC0-compliant results. We believe that the vast majority of users will use this tool as intended and never encounter a licensing issue.
That said, the library is sourced from a third-party audio provider where individual creators upload and tag their own content. We apply CC0 filters on every search, but neither we nor the provider can independently verify the licensing accuracy of every individual file across a library of this size. A small minority of sounds may be incorrectly tagged by their uploaders. There is a level of trust built into any open library of this scale.
If a sound you used through SoundPainter turns out to have been incorrectly tagged by its uploader, we are not liable for any downstream consequences, including but not limited to copyright claims, takedowns, or legal action. We encourage you to report any sound you believe is mislabeled so we can flag it.
Scenes, campaigns, sessions, and other content you create within SoundPainter are part of the SoundPainter.io platform. You may export or take your data with you, but content created on the platform belongs to SoundPainter.io.
If you publish a scene to the Town Square (our community sharing feature), other users may use and adapt that scene within SoundPainter.
SoundPainter includes a chat feature and allows you to upload custom images (dogtag art). We have filters in place for inappropriate content, but we cannot review every message or upload in real time. If you encounter content in chat, in shared scenes, or in the sound library that you find offensive or inappropriate, please report it to us. We will review and take action where warranted, but we are not liable for content posted by other users or present in the third-party sound library.
SoundPainter is free to use. All scenes, all sounds, and the core app experience are available at no cost, indefinitely. There is no trial period and no core feature lockout.
Optionally, you can become a Power User for $3.99/month. This gives you additional room to plan, organize, and archive your campaigns and sessions. Payment is handled through Stripe. We do not store your credit card information; Stripe handles that entirely.
You can cancel your Power User subscription at any time from the Account Management section. When you cancel, your subscription remains active until the end of the current billing period, then reverts to the free experience. Content you created while subscribed is not deleted.
If you request a refund within 24 hours of a charge, we will issue it. Beyond 24 hours, all sales are final unless there are extreme circumstances.
When you create an account, we store your email address and a display name you choose. Your password is stored securely and is never accessible in plain text.
We log every request to the application (page loads, API calls) with the following information: timestamp, the URL path requested, HTTP method and status code, response time, your user ID (if signed in), your IP address, and a truncated user-agent string. These logs are used for debugging, performance monitoring, and detecting abuse. They are retained indefinitely.
We track which sounds you search for and which sounds you play. This data is used to improve search results and power recommendation features (like the Third Eye). It is not shared with anyone.
We use Plausible Analytics, a privacy-friendly analytics service that does not use cookies, does not collect personal data, and is fully GDPR compliant.
We do not use Google Analytics. We do not use Meta Pixel. There are no advertising trackers, retargeting scripts, or big-tech data pipelines on this site. SoundPainter.io is fully independent of Google, Meta, Amazon, and any other advertising-driven platform.
We will never sell your data. We will never share your personal information with third parties for advertising purposes. We do not run ads. We do not use tracking cookies. We do not build advertising profiles.
The only third parties that handle your data are Cloudflare (hosting and infrastructure), Stripe (payment processing, only if you subscribe), and our email provider (password resets and account verification emails). Each of these is used strictly for the purpose described and nothing else.
You agree not to:
SoundPainter.io, its design, code, branding, and original content are the property of SoundPainter.io. You may not copy, reproduce, or redistribute the application or its components without written permission.
The sounds in the library are sourced from a third-party provider under CC0 licensing. Your use of those sounds is governed by the CC0 terms, not by us. We do not own the sounds; we provide access to them.
Some visual assets in SoundPainter (scene dogtag images, UI illustrations) are AI-generated placeholders. These will be replaced with original artwork as the product generates revenue. This is a core commitment.
SoundPainter.io is provided "as is." We work hard to keep the service reliable, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted availability. The service depends on third-party infrastructure (hosting, audio delivery, payment processing) that is outside our direct control.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, SoundPainter.io is not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service, including but not limited to data loss, service interruptions, or copyright claims related to sounds in the library.
We may update these terms as the product evolves. When we make significant changes, we will notify you via email or through a notice in the app. Your continued use of SoundPainter after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York. Any dispute arising from these terms or your use of SoundPainter will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in New York.
